People speak of loving woman who nursed hubby back after stroke
An ex-police man and former businessman is expected to be charged this week for the shooting of his wife at their home in Pineapple Ocho Rios, St Ann.
The woman, Charmaine Smith, known to many as ‘Babs’ was reportedly shot in the eye and side by her ex-police husband in Pineapple Place, Ocho Rios, St Ann on Wednesday morning, March 4. The couple shares a home in Pineapple where they have lived for many years. They have been experiencing difficulties in the marriage for years. Friends say matters were made no better when the husband’s auto business on Main Street collapsed with millions owing to the bank. That was said to be behind a massive stroke that he suffered shortly after the business folded. “It’s the wife who brought him back and got him physio (therapy) and did everything for him,” said a family friend. The Times was told that the husband has been suffering from depression though having made good advance from the stroke suffered three years ago. Mrs Smith was allegedly shot after she and her husband reportedly had one of their frequent disputes which escalated. Allegations also are that the husband attempted to shoot other family members.
Mrs Smith was rushed to St Ann’s Bay Hospital and then taken by air ambulance to Kingston Public Hospital (KPH) where she is in serious but stable condition. Family members say she has however lost her right eye.
Police say the man has been taken into custody and is to be charged this week.
Police told the North Coast Times that the two had frequent arguments. A family member who spoke with The Times says the source of the latest argument was private but said it was a series of incidents that led to the shooting. The family member also said the man was also hospitalised over the weekend after he reportedly suffered from trauma and his blood pressure shot up, causing police to fear he might have suffered another stroke.
The shooting has split the family with few members wanting anything to do with the accused husband who was being held at the Ocho Rios police station.

BULLET REMOVED

Mrs Smith’s sister Viveth Pasmore says her sister has been recovering well at hospital. She said Mrs Smith underwent surgery which removed the bullet from her side. “She is in high spirits and is recovering very well, thank God. She is praising and thanking God for spearing her life and the family is extremely grateful,” Ms Pasmore said.

The shooting shocked members of the Pineapple community, most of whom say they have known the couple for years. The two have operated businesses and lived in the area for many years where they raised their children.

The Coho Rios police say they are investigating the matter.
