The Epworth Primary School’s third edition of Lit-o-Plosion, was marked by enthusiasm and excitement.  The Competition not only had new sponsors but also new prizes and new categories and the students were all for it.Students now competed in the traditional spell-off and comprehension competition and a new category choral speaking and were also hosted by the Ziva Solutions Extraordinaire Team. This year’s competition also took a new direction receiving a substantial nod of confidence with full sponsorship from the Betton family.  This sponsorship was provided in the memory of Lewis and Ellen Betton, long standing community members who have always supported the development of the school and community.Competitions initiator and host Christall Byfield, described the competition as rewarding. “Since its inception I have had the joy of watching students grow over the years. They are students who were now bursting with confidence. Some of these students would never have dreamt of entering the competition in its first year. While there are some students who grew in their determination to win and the third time was definitely the charm. I truly believe this competition should be replicated in other schools and probably at QEC and regional level.”

Grade two teacher Dionne Gray spoke of the competition with pride describing it as one which she believed  boosted students’ vocabulary and also motivated students in reading. It also provided parents with an authentic opportunity to work with their students.Special commendations went to this year’s  Top Boy Benjamin Wallace and Top Girl Olivia Cohen who displayed overall excellence through participation, confidence and ability. The competition has become a significant part of the school’s academic programme and has proven to have remarkable impact on the students overall social, emotional and academic development. Special Thanks to the community, the judges Jacqueline Parkinson, Latoya Simpson and Dionne Lewis;  sponsors the Betton family, Christall Byfield, the parents, the teachers and the students .

The planning for the next year’s competition has already started, said principal Kirk Spencer
