Students parents and members of the community surrounding Parry Town Primary and Infant School were in celebratory mood last week Wednesday during the handing over of nearly 450 computer tablets under the Government’s Tablets in Schools Programme pilot project.Parry Town , in the South East St Ann constituency represented by Lisa Hanna, is the only St Ann school to have been involved and the second to last school in the island to get tablets under the programme. The last was Rio Bueno Primary, Trelawny that received their computers on Thursday, January 29.Ms Hanna and Mr Paulwell shared in the handing over of 449 tablets and also made comments about the programme and education. Teachers have already been trained and given their computers ahead of Wednesday’s function. The Government says under the distribution phase of the $1.2 billion pilot that ended Thursday, some 25,000 tablet computers were distributed to teachers and students in 38 educational institutions across the island. In addition to Paulwell and Hanna, also in attendance were: mayor of St Ann’s Bay, Desmond Gilmore and councillor for the Beecher Town division, Ian Bell who is chairman of the Board and chaired the function. The message throughout the ceremony was consistent, children should use the computers for learning so they can compete in a changing world and that parents and the community have a responsibility to assist them. Many members of the community were thrilled that the ceremony was taking place in Parry Town, that has a serious squatter problem but where roads have been repaired recently. They commented on how children they knew were on the big stage performing well. They were particularly proud of ten-year-old ??? who presented the vote of thanks in a fluent and professional manner, receiving commendations from the two cabinet ministers and the prolonged cheers of the audience..
