DISCOVERY BAY, St Ann; September 25, 2025
Groups from around Discovery Bay, St Ann came together on International Coastal Clean-up Day, Saturday, September 20, 2025 and cleared garbage from sections of beaches in the town.
Participating were team members from Discovery Bauxite St. Ann, the University of the West Indies Marine Laboratory, Discovery Bay, the local Farm Town JAS District Committee, and the St. Ann Justices-of-the-Peace Association. They focussed on beaches at Old Folly and the Marine Laboratory’s Boardwalk Beach.
Over 210 pounds of waste were removed from the Old Folly beach site. One hundred and fifty pounds of it was described as general waste, and the remainder as recyclable material. Old Folly Beach and Discovery Bauxite’s offices provided collection points for Recycling Partners of Jamaica.
The project was coordinated by Discovery Bauxite’s Environment & Safety Officer Claudy-Ann Forbes and the Marine Laboratory’s Scientific Officer for Outreach Ramone Cohen.

Forbes said that the bauxite company has been playing an active role in the beach clean-up activities since 2012.
“We are pleased with the support given by employees and community clubs who regard it as an opportunity to pay attention to environment, health, and public safety issues, and to lend a hand to initiatives like these,” she said.
The annual Discovery Bay beach cleanup projects have recovered thousands of pounds of debris and garbage over the past 15 years.
