FATHER OF SLAIN CHILDREN REMAINS IN CUSTODY

MOM TREATED FOR MINOR INJURIES; GETTING EMOTIONAL SUPPORT

MONEAGUE, St Ann; Aug. 27, 2025

The mother of the two children slain in Moneague, St Ann, has received medical attention and is to get assistance from the Victims Support Unit as police continue their investigation into a crime that has shocked the community.

Dead are: one-year-old Ameir Saunders and three-year-old Shamair Henry.

North Coast Times had not used the names earlier, as the police had asked for them not to be released. However, several reports have identified the children.

Meantime, Prime Minister Andrew Holness, in a statement on Wednesday afternoon, said the Government and people of Jamaica are today “deeply shaken and heartbroken by the tragic incident in Moneague, St. Ann.”

He said further: “I extend my deepest condolences to the grieving mother, family members, and the wider community, who must now grapple with this unimaginable pain and loss. No parent should ever have to endure such a tragedy, and as a country we mourn alongside them.”

Police confirm that two boys aged one year and three years were found dead on Wednesday morning, August 27, 2025, with stab wounds. The mother had reported to the Moneague police on Tuesday evening that the father had been attacking the toddlers with a pair of scissors.

Police who went to locate the children could not find them Tuesday night and a search widened to include residents and the JDF.

Their bodies were found in bushes near their house on Wednesday morning.

The father of the boys, a hotel worker, was taken into police custody.

Reports are that he consumed a large amount of ganja before attacking his children. Area residents said he was a loving, caring father.

Officers from the Major Investigations Division and the St Ann police, led by Acting Senior Superintendent Rohan Elliott, were on the scene at the home of the family in Swamp, Moneague. They sent for the mother of the children, and she was questioned at the scene.

Acting SSP Elliott told the North Coast Times that she got medical treatment for some minor injuries resulting from a scuffle with the children’s father. He said support was also being arranged for her through the Victim Support Unit.

Meanwhile, people in the area have been speculating about what led to the children’s death and who was involved. But police say their investigations are continuing, and the father remains a suspect in custody.
