SOME PUZZLING QUESTIONS ON FALMOUTH

SOME PUZZLING QUESTIONS ON FALMOUTH

Leon Jackson

For some time now, some things happening in and around Falmouth have given me cause for concern. I have not been able to get a reasonable explanation why the custos of Trelawny, Paul Muschette has not found a method of installing any new justices of the peace (JPs), three years after he was installed in an elaborate ceremony held in Water Square, Falmouth. Some JPs have offered reasons in his defence, but these have been so weak any grade seven student could see the flimsiness of them. One of the island’s daily newspaper splashed a large headline declaring that over $500 million is to be spent on making Falmouth very friendly to guests from the cruise ships docking at the Falmouth Pier, which was officially opened on March 11, 2011.  You see, announcements of similar nature have been made ever since the first thought  was expressed of a pier to be constructed in the Historic Georgian Town of Falmouth. Just last year, the Custos, Member of Parliament for North Trelawny, Minister of Tourism, the Mayor of Falmouth plus others walked the streets of Falmouth to get an oversight of what was needed. They probably did not find anything. I am assuming that, since it needed another attendance at a conference for another announcement. If you drive along the Market Street in the vicinity of the bridge at Martha Brae there is a lot of reclamation of lands where the river used to bring down the fishes which residents love. My question is: how could permission be given to do this when each and every one knows that the river needs the space. Are we to understand that the river will turn back to where it’s coming from. Tell the residents for they need to know. The headlines screamed improvements for Burwood Beach. On going there, improvements are evident. Improved amendments, gazebos nicely finished. Someone needs to tell those involved that people using the beach need bathroom facilities. How can there be bathroom facilities coming on the back end of the compound? I await the answer to these observations with a view of achieving what is needed for the good of us all in and around Falmouth.
