Several members of the police force supported the St Ann Municipal Police on Friday, January 23, in clearing away illegal stalls, roadside vending tents, and umbrellas that cluttered the streets of Brown’s Town, especially in the area around the market.

Since late last year, following Hurricane Melissa, vendors have set up all over the streets OF Brown’s Town, reducing parking spaces and taking up already limited sidewalks. Some have pitched tents, used for roadside cooking, that each take up two or three parking spaces.
The widespread vending activities have also led to near confrontations between vendors and delivery truck drivers trying to access shops.
Many vendors ran with their goods, some leaving their display tables as the security teams moved in. Others closed their car trunks, concealing the goods, and yet others verbally opposed the move, saying they had to eat and feed their children. Some said they had the authority or permission to sell on the streets.
Goods were thrown into a truck operated on behalf of the St Ann Municipal Corporation as police took up position in areas often occupied by illegal vendors, but cleared on Friday.
