Wavell Hinds Concedes Making Run-Off Unnecessary
Dr Kenneth Russell is to be the PNP’s Candidate for South East St Ann in the next General Elections.
In a statement Thursday, the People’s National Party said Dr Russell, an educator, is the candidate after cricketer Wavell Hinds decided to step back from a race initially scheduled for Sunday, July 2 to decide on the party’s standard bearer.
PNP MP Lisa Hanna has already indicated she will not be seeing re-election in South East St Ann in the next elections.
The decision for the run off came after Dr Russell emerged as the leader among three candidates who put themselves forward to replace Lisa Hanna. The other two in that election were Hinds and Patricia Duncan Sutherland.
However, even though he won, Dr Russell did not get the required 50 percent plus one in the vote count to be the automatic choice.
In the election on June 11, Of the 778 delegates who voted Russell polled 358 votes, Wavell Hinds 245, and Patricia Duncan Sutherland 171. Four votes were spoilt.
The run-off Sunday was to be between Russell and Hinds.
However, the party said Hinds “graciously conceded.” The release said “Wavell Hinds showcased commendable dedication and commitment throughout the selection process. His gracious concession to Dr Russell exemplifies his strong commitment to the Party’s principles and the spirit of comradeship.”
General Secretary of the Party Dr Dayton Campbell
Said the PNP called on the organization and supporters in South East St Ann to rally around Dr Kenneth Russell.
