EFFORTS TO HELP LOCAL ECONOMY TO BENEFIT

Tournament Director Bobby Stewart

Twenty boats registered on the first day of the seventh staging of the Mayberry Superstars International Marlin Tournament, in Port Antonio, Portland on Wednesday, October 11.

A sum of over three hundred thousand US dollars (US$300,000) is up for grabs in the tournament that ends Friday.

Five marlins were released on the first day.

Tournament director Bobby Stewart is upbeat about the event. “We have twenty-four boats entered this year and it’s a record for the seven years we have been running the tournament. We have a number of Caymanian boats who have adopted this tournament… We have anglers that have come in from Portugal,” he said.

There are three prizes for record catch, each with a value of US$100,000, in addition to the US$30,000 for standard cash prizes.

Mr Stewart said the fishing conditions look good.

He said the tournament used as many local people as possible for meals and work on the docks, in an effort to support the local economy.
