People in communities around Discovery Bay, St Ann, where Puerto Seco Beach has achieved pride of place, have been speaking about the lease of the beach. There are different views about how the lease to the Kenny Benjamin-led Guardsman group was carried out and the unannounced clousre of Puerto Seco in November. The beach remains closed as renovation has started. In interviews with the North Coast Times, several residents to include business people, fisherfolk and public transport operators expressed regret at how the popular attraction was closed in November, just before it would have received thousands of holiday makers from across the country. Many, however, express support for the take over by Guardsman if it’s going to mean jobs and improvements to the facilities. But most had advice or even a warning for the new leasees ‘Keep the price for beach entry at the same $300 it was, or lower.”
Mr Benjamin’s group was represented at a meeting held this year by the Discovery Bay Community Development Committee.
