A woman was killed in an early morning crash in central Ocho Rios, St Ann, Saturday, June 13, when a driver lost control of his vehicle that ran across the roadway, mounted the sidewalk, killing her.

Police have identified her as Claudette Thorpe of Petersfield in the neighbouring parish of St Mary.

Police say the driver fled the scene but was handed over by relatives.

Reports are that the crash occurred about 6:10 a.m. Saturday, along Main Street, Ocho Rios, St Ann in the vicinity of the Big Ben Supermarket.

Police say a 27-year-old man was driving a white 2014 Toyota Mark X motorcar in an easterly direction along Main Street.

On reaching the Ocho Rios Market, the driver lost control of the vehicle, which veered right across the roadway, climbed the sidewalk and collided with a pedestrian before smashing into a wooden utility pole off the right road edge, in the vicinity of Big Ben supermarket.

The pedestrian, Ms Thorpe, received injuries and was taken to the St Ann’s Bay hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Police say the driver fled the scene. He was later handed over by family members to the police. The vehicle had damage to the entire front and left section and was wrecked to the Ocho Rios Police Station pending further examination.
