TEEN CHARGED IN BEATING OF ELDERLY MAN

SECOND SUSPECT BEING SOUGHT AS MAN REMAINS HOSPITALIZED

PORT MARIA, St Mary; April 17, 2026

The St. Mary Police have charged a 16-year-old male for the wounding of an elderly man who has been hospitalized after he was attacked outside the Port Maria Market.

The teen has been charged with wounding with intent.

Police said he admitted that he and a man used a piece of board to beat the elderly man who was asleep at the market.

The teen cannot be identified as he is a minor.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, April 1, 2026.

Reports indicate that at about 1:10 a.m., police responded to information received regarding an elderly man found lying unresponsive with a head injury at the market. Upon arrival, officers discovered the 70-year-old complainant with a severe wound to the head, bleeding profusely.

The injured man was transported to the Port Maria Hospital, where he was admitted in serious condition. He was later transferred to the Kingston Public Hospital for further medical treatment. Medical personnel indicated that his injuries were consistent with blunt force trauma to the head.

An investigation was launched into the incident.

According to police, on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, the accused was apprehended during a police operation. Police said that during a subsequent interview conducted in the presence of “legal representation”, the accused admitted involvement in the incident. He reported that he and an accomplice used a piece of board to inflict injuries on the complainant while he slept at the location.

The accused teen was formally charged on Thursday, April 16, 2026, following a question-and-answer session in the presence of his attorney.

Investigations are ongoing as police continue efforts to identify and apprehend the second suspect involved in the attack. The elderly man remains hospitalized.
