Ministry of Education Responds to MP’s Call for Principal’s Appointment

The Ministry of Education says the Teachers’ Service Commission (TSC) did not support the recommendation by the Board of St Mary High School for a Principal to fill a vacancy there.
The Ministry says, “The TSC did not support the recommendation due to a number of concerns regarding the process.” Further, the Ministry says, “The [Teachers Services] Commission will work with the institution to better understand the recruitment process in accordance with established procedures.”

The Ministry of Education, Skills, Youth and Information (MOESYI) was responding to a statement by Central St Mary MP Omar Newell calling for the appointment of the Board-recommended candidate. In an interview with the North Coast Times on Monday, Mr Newell said the appointment was necessary to ensure stability and planning at the institution, which should not start another year without a principal.MP CALLS FOR IMMEDIATE APPOINTMENT OF PRINCIPAL FOR ST MARY HIGH

In its statement Tuesday, September 1, 2026, MOESYI set out the “transparent process” it said was used by the Ministry in the appointment of principals in public educational institutions.
It said, “The Board of Management is responsible for advertising the vacancy, shortlisting and interviewing candidates and making a recommendation. The recommendation and supporting documentation are then submitted to the Teachers’ Service Commission (TSC) for review and deliberation. Following the decision of the Commission, there is a subsequent review by the Minister as per the law.”
The TSC, in this case, did not support the recommendation due to concerns about the process followed by the Board, the Ministry said.
“With respect to the St Mary High appointment process, the TSC did not support the recommendation due to a number of concerns regarding the process. The Commission will work with the institution to better understand the recruitment process in accordance with established procedures,” the Ministry said.
