PORTLANDERS WIN 186 MEDALS IN PERFORMING ARTS

JCDC PUTS ON FINALS IN 5 ART FORMS

Various stages came alive in Portland in a display of the performing arts 2024 Parish Finals in  Speech, Traditional Folk Forms, Drama, Dance, and Music. The dance finals were held in St Mary.

The finals were under the auspices of the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC).

A total of  186 medals were awarded across the categories. One hundred medals were awarded in speech, 10 in dance, 23 in Traditional Folk Forms, 9 in drama, and 44 in music.

The Traditional Folk Forms finals were held on Monday, March 11 at the TP Lecky Hall, The College of Agriculture Science and Education; Music, Drama, and Speech were held at The Wesleyan Holiness Church Boundbrook on March 13, 15 & 18 respectively and Dance on Friday, March 22 at Wycliffe Martin High School, Port Maria St. Mary.

Several Gold medals were won, with Port Antonio Theatre Group shining in all. Here are the Gold medal winners, in the categories adjudicated:

TRADITIONAL FOLK FORMS

  • Liberty Learning Centre

MUSIC

  • Port Antonio Theatre Group
  • Port Antonio High School
  • Port Antonio Primary School

DRAMA

  • Port Antonio High School
  • Port Antonio Theatre Group

SPEECH

  • Port Antonio Theatre Group
  • Buff Bay High School
  • Port Antonio High School
  • Port Antonio Primary School
  • Empowerment Learning Centre

 

The adjudicators for the different art forms were:

Music — Kevan Williams, Jermaine Gordon, and Keino Barnett;

Dance — Dr. Claudette Clarke, Donna Williams, and Kevin Moore;

Speech – Tony Patel, Vanessa Gardner and Kenneth Salmon

Drama –  David Crossgill and Dionne Somers-Campbell,

Traditional Folk Forms –  Hazel Ramsay-McClune and Lety Cross

The gold medal finalists will go on to the National finals later this year.
