POLICE SERGEANT CHARGED

Court told that at station she threw gun magazine to mom, in brother’s arrest

The female police sergeant, who was arrested after an incident involving a relative, was slapped with charges of attempting to pervert the course of justice.

A ruling handed down by the office of director of public prosecutions (ODPP) said that the sergeant should be charged.

Charged is Amoy West.

She was taken before the Port Maria Resident Magistrate’s Court on Friday, May 6 after being charged early Friday morning.

The sergeant was arrested after she reportedly intervened in a police case against a relative who had been arrested for an illegal M-16 magazine found at his house. That incident followed a raid at the relative’s house Saturday morning, April 9.

West had been released from police custody without being charged, as the police were awaiting the ruling from the office of the director of public prosecutions (ODPP).

The sergeant, and her brother, Ian West, who is an ex-cop, and their mother, Valerie West who lived at the same house were taken into police custody following the reported police raid in which the magazine was found that Saturday.

Sources told the North Coast Times that the ex-cop, was being processed at the Port Maria police station when the female sergeant and other relatives went there.

In court, it was stated that around 3 p.m., the sergeant went to the police station and allegedly took up the illegal M-16 magazine and threw it to her mother, Valerie West, in an attempt to dispose of the magazine.

However, it was not revealed in court if the illegal magazine was ever recovered.

West and her mother were arrested following the incident.

The ex-cop, the police sergeant’s brother, Ian West, was taken before the Port Maria Resident Magistrate Court Monday where he received bail on Monday, April 11.

He was charged with unlawful possession of property and received bail in the sum of $30,000 with surety.

However, according to defence attorney in the matter, Kevon Johnson, that charge of unlawful possession of property was dropped.

He was later charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice, larceny and refusal to allow the police to inspect his firearm.

His mother was offered station bail in the sum of $30,000 with surety.

It is understood that she was charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice and larceny.

BAIL GRANTED

Attorney representing the sergeant in the matter, Kevon Johnson submitted to resident magistrate Yvette Wentworth-Miller that West was a serving member of the force and had made herself available to questioning and arrest on the day of the incident.

Queen’s Counsel Valerie Neita-Robinson is also in the matter.

The investigating officer had suggested that bail be set at $80,000.

However, RM Wentworth-Miller granted bail to West in the sum of $100,000 with surety.

As a condition of her bail, she is to surrender all travel documents and a stop order was put in place.

West is expected to return to court with her brother and mother on July 21 when the matter is to be mentioned.
