A native from the country’s capital, Kingston, Michael Matthews moved to the parish of St Mary in 1979. From then, he has always been a great part of community development and has been recently awarded by the St Mary Parish Council for his great level of volunteerism.A construction worker, Matthews holds the position of chairman for the Oracabessa Disaster Committee and is a two-time president for the Oracabessa Primary School. He also sits on the board of the said school. He is a member of the Jamaica Foundation for Lifelong Learning’s executive committee and a victim support volunteer in Emergency Amateur Radio Service, a disaster awareness radio station put in place by the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM).Matthews grew up with his parents and ten siblings in Dunkweld a community located near the St Mary/ St Catherine border.. He attended the Hamwalk All-Age School and then the Highgate All-Age School. He holds a Level two certificate in General Construction from the HEART Trust institution. He is also a Justice of the Peace for the parish of St Mary and lives in Barriffe Hall in the parish.
