Family pays $40,000 but that’s short $160,000
RM says must pay all before he is An accused man who appeared in court last Thursday, October 9, for allegedly stealing a bag containing $200,000 from a business place in Discovery Bay, St. Ann has been remanded into custody.
Resident magistrate Andrea Thomas has said that Andrew Bowers will remain behind bars until full restitution is made. When he appeared before her last Thursday, Bowers’ sister paid over $40,000 in court.
The accused then requested that he be given a month to come up with the balance of the stolen money.
Bowers is alleged to have stolen $200,000. However, he has only admitted to taking $102,500. The proprietor of the business place on Columbus Plaza, Discovery Bay has said that $200,000 was placed in the bag that was stolen by Bowers.
Reports are that Bowers, a construction worker, went to a business establishment on Columbus Plaza and was conducting business when a cashier stepped away from the cash register beside which there was a bag containing cash to pay a supplier.
It is reported that the bag was later discovered missing and although CCTV footage showed Bowers removing the bag, at first he denied involvement.
On a previous court appearance, Bowers who is from Queenhyte in Discovery Bay told the court that he returned the money after ‘don men’ in the community ordered him to return the stolen cash.
Bowers is to return to court on November 10 for sentencing. Full restitution is also expected to be made then. The magistrate has ordered a social enquiry report.
