2ND MAN CHARGED IN CRUISE SHIP WORKER’S MURDER

Two now charged for double murder in Runaway Bay area

One of two men who have been in custody in relation to the murder of a man at Mount Edgecombe in Runaway Bay, St. Ann, in August, has been slapped with a second murder charge.

Shawn Thompson, who is already charged for the murder of Dwight Asphall of Mount Edgecombe, was last week charged in relation to the murder of cruise shop worker Weggon Bennett.

Investigators had earlier charged another man, Junior White, for Bennett’s murder.

Both men were also charged for Asphall’s murder.

The men are now before the St. Ann’s Bay Resident Magistrates court on two counts of murder and two counts of robbery with aggravation.

Both men appeared before Resident Magistrates Vaughn Facey last week and were remanded into custody until December 5, when the case will again be mentioned.

The men were taken into custody on August 8, for questioning, after police said they led investigators to the mutilated body of Asphall at his house at Mount Edgecombe, Runaway Bay, about 10:30 p.m.

The men were reportedly covered in blood and were handed over to police in Discovery Bay by a taxi operator who became suspicious of the two men. Asphall sustained some 28 stabs and investigators say at least one of his attackers was also wounded.

Investigators say it was while investigating Asphall’s murder that connection was made to Bennett’s death which occurred earlier in the year, in March.

Bennett was found murdered inside his Bellair home by his daughter, who has just returned home from school. His hands and feet were bound. He was stabbed multiple times.

In both cases, the men had worked overseas and had been at their homes when attacked and stabbed to death. The killers, in both cases, also robbed several electronic items, personal goods and cash.
