Man to be sentenced after smashing window of truck he said splashed him

A St Mary man, who used a stone to smash the glass window of a man’s truck door, is to return to court on January 5 for sentencing after pleading guilty to malicious destruction of property.

The accused man, 23-year-old Oshane Reid, a mason of Boscobel, St Mary appeared before the St Mary Parish Court on Thursday, December 15.

Reports are that on October 2, at about 9:30 a.m., the accused approached the complainant who was sitting in his truck in the Boscobel Housing Scheme.

Reid told the man that he splashed him when he was passing earlier that morning. However, the man explained that he had no knowledge of doing such to him.

Reid later took up a stone and threw it, which resulted in the glass window of the truck door being smashed. Reid was later slapped with charges of malicious destruction of property. When cautioned, he told the police, “A him splash mi up wit him truck.”

When asked by acting senior parish judge Yvette Wentworth-Miller why he damaged the man’s truck, Reid explained that on the day in question, he was walking and going about his business.

He said that on reaching a “big pothole” a truck drove into it and it resulted in water splashing on his face and soaked him.

He said he went to the driver and explained that he had splashed him, but the man indicated that he did not see him.

“I got so upset and took up the stone and fling it in the window, because I was so upset, Your Honor,” Reid added.

He further added that if the man had apologized and said sorry, he would not have been upset.

When asked by Judge Wentworth-Miller why he shouldn’t be sent to prison, Reid indicated that he was taking care of his sick mother and grandmother, but he was working to pay back the man.

It was at that time that the complainant indicated that he paid around $46,000 to fix the glass window.

Reid’s sentencing was delayed until early January, when he is to also bring the money to compensate the complainant for his damaged glass.

His bail was extended until that time.
