Man in tourist police video beating could be charged

The much talked about court case involving Trellian Thorpe and two Tourism Courtesy Corp (TCC) officers, so called tourism police, is set for hearing again nearly seven weeks from now. This, as a medical file and issues surrounding the possibility of charges to be laid against Chad Simmons are to be sorted out so the case can progress. This was revealed when the matter was mentioned in the St Ann’s Bay RM court on Friday, June 13. The case is to be called up again on Tuesday, August 19 and at that time a medical form is to be obtained for Thorpe. When the matter was first heard on Tuesday, June 3, 2014, Karren Russell, the attorney representing Thorpe said that Simmons was driving fear into her client, following an incident in which Thorpe was beaten by two members of the TCC. The incident was captured on camera and went viral on social media, with persons venting their anger and  disgust at the actions of the TCC officers. Trillian Thorpe, a vendor of Ocho Rios was arrested by a TCC officer after it was alleged that she was illegally offering her services as a tour guide, failure to move and keep moving, resisting arrest, and assaulting TCC officers. Following the publicity in response to the video, members of Marksman Security Company came out in support of the actions of the two officers who were involved in the incident. Russell had raised concerns over the charges to be laid against Simmons at the last court hearing stating that an assault charge was on file for Simmons to answer. This was not ventilated in court hence the matter will be revisited for the court to determine the charges to be laid against Simmons.
