The Kiwanis Club of Discovery Bay celebrated its 24th anniversary with a special meeting in the hall of the Carl Rattray Center, Runaway Bay, St Ann, on Tuesday, June 17. The Kiwanis club is a global organization of volunteers who are dedicated and committed to serve the vulnerable children of the world. In addition to club members and their guests, members from other Kiwanis Clubs including Ochi Rios, Port Maria and Brown’s Town and Freeport, were in attendance. Members from the Kiwanis club shared their views about the club being recognized for its name but also for all the hard work of its members in helping communities and in bringing people together. Guest speaker for the night was Superintend of police, Michael Morris who spoke about the Jamaican economy, crime, lottery scam, drugs and human trafficking. He said that “Jamaica could be a better country if we start producing some chemists and inventing some software programmes to push the country forwards because it seems like most students who do science in high school wants to be a doctor or a pediatrician.” He said: “I’m ashamed of how Jamaica has turned out to be this day today.” Past Lieutenant governor Cherrie Rowe presented a plaque to the guest speaker. Entrainment was done by Keith Rowe, emcee. Organizer of the function was Odette Rose, vice president from the Discovery Bay Kiwanis Club. President is Andrea Chung.
