First Steps Educational Development Centre graduates 21

First Steps Educational Development Centre on Wednesday, June 29, sent off 21 children in their annual graduation ceremony held on the school’s grounds in Port Maria, St. Mary.

Twenty-two graduates were to have graduated, but one was not in attendance at the ceremony.

The event, which was well supported by parents and well-wishers of the institution, was one showcasing the talents and excellence of the graduates while celebrating their achievement of completing their first step on the journey towards personal development.

Guest speaker, Diandra McKenzie was straight-forward in her address as she reminded the parents and guardians gathered that they had a vital responsibility in the lives of their children.

“Accommodate the right influence around your children… Learn to teach them to save from early and reinforce positive behavior and discourage wrong behavior,” she said.

Principal of the institution, Edwina Brown spoke of the several activities of the institution throughout the academic year that were aimed at improving the academics at the school. Some of these included Career’s Day and Sports Day. She also lauded the staff, including the cook, members of the board and the parents for their continued support to the institution. While admitting that she, along with the teachers would miss each student moving forward, Ms Brown implored the graduates to continue to work harder as they moved on to higher education.

The graduation saw several performances from the graduating class, including sign language, a dance and a song.

The head student report was read by Joshon Smith, who was assisted by the principal. In his report, little Joshon expressed his gratitude on behalf of his peers to the teachers and their parents. He received a loud applause and cheers from the audience for his efforts.

The proud moment for several parents was seeing their children walk to collect their certificates, plaques and prizes.

Joshon Smith excelled among his peers as he placed first among the graduating batch with a 98 percent average. In addition, he picked up the award for most outstanding student in science.

Kejonie Soley, Sheamonia Buchanan and Syesha Gordon all tied for second place. In addition, to his second place award, young Kejonie walked away with the most outstanding student in mathematics.

The graduation ceremony was chaired by Sheldon Royes.first step
