The Ferncourt High School located in Claremont, St Ann, celebrated their Jamaica Day on Friday, February 27, on the school grounds. Most students were decked out in their Jamaican colours and a few others dressed casually. The day’s activities included the raising of National Flag by the cadets of the school and school band’s musical performance in the morning session. The devotional exercise was conducted by Pastor Durueke. There were also displays of several traditional items and cuisine being displayed, for students to learn and know the facts of Jamaica’s culture. During leisure time the students indulged in board games and could be seen in the auditorium playing action traditional games.Present at the school’s Jamaica Day also were booths, operated by JMMB, HEART Trust NTA, National Council on Drug abuse and the St Ann Parish Council. The representatives from each establishment were on hand to give advice to the students and teachers about choices. Donna Woolery-McKenzie, culture agent of the school could be seen showing students the different cuisine, some of the food items included salt mackerel in run down, salt fish fritters, Jamaica’s national dish, ackee and saltfish, potato puddings and much more. The students conduct throughout the viewing was exceptional, with high interest, eagerness and orderly conduct.
The Jamaica Day ended in the auditorium with a grand concert focusing mainly on Jamaica’s folklore.
