The communities of Retreat, Three Hills and Charles Town in St Mary are mourning the death of educator and former principal of Retreat All Age School, Alva Sewell.
She died Wednesday, May 3, aged 86.
Ms Sewell, who spent her entire adult life in education was well known also for her community work and as one dedicated to the people of Charles Town and Retreat, St Mary whom she served as justice of the peace for many years.
Her friend and former educator, Daphne Hylton describes Ms Sewell as a dedicated educator and friend. “She was involved in everything in the community.” She told the North Coast Times that Ms Sewell was born and grew up in Charles Town and studied at Bethlehem Teachers College in St Elizabeth from which she graduated in 1954 and returned to the community. She said Ms Sewell served at Retreat All Age and was principal at the time the new school building opened.
Thanksgiving service for the life of Alva Sewell will take place on Saturday, May 27 at the Retreat Holy Trinity Anglican Church. She leaves behind
