Car washer charged with death of St Mary woman in crash granted bail

A St Ann man charged for manslaughter, in the traffic death of a woman was granted bail when he appeared before the St Ann’s Bay Resident Magistrates Court on Thursday, January 23.He is 18-year-old Ryan Jackson. Jackson was charged with manslaughter in relation to the death of 47-year old Joy Reid also called Precious of Retreat, St Mary.Jackson is also charged for driving away a motor vehicle without the owner’s consent and for having no driver’s licence and no insurance coverage.The North Coast Times reported last week that on Saturday, January 11, about 9: p.m.   Jackson is reported to have driven away, without the permission of the owner, an SUV that had been left at a car wash in Exchange District, near Ocho Rios.  Jackson reportedly worked at the car wash. It is reported that a short distance from there, the SUV, a Pajero, being driven by Jackson, drifted to the right into the path of a Nissan pick-up being driven by Roland Piggot, in which Reid was a passenger. The collision of the two vehicles, near the Content Gardens intersection with the North Coast Highway  led to Reid being thrown from  the pick up onto the roadway. She was pronounced dead at hospital. Her common-law-husband, Piggot the driver of the pick-up was hospitalized with two broken legs and other injuries. Reid and Piggot were on  their way home from  the Ocho Rios Market where Mr Piggot is a butcher.In court Thursday, Jackson was offered bail in the sum of $450,000 with surety when he appeared before senior magistrate, Andrea Thomas.He was ordered to report to the Watt Town police station three times weekly between 6am and 6pm. Jackson is to return to court on Wednesday, April 16.
