An elderly man in the community of Charles Town, St Mary has a new comfortable shelter now, thanks to assistance from community leader and councillor, Colonel Hugh Radway. Mr Radway makes it clear that his assistance had nothing to do with politics or his role as councillor but came out of what he felt was his “social responsibility.” Sometime ago, in recognition of the need of Alfred Walters for a house, the Church of God in Jamaica, Charles Town led by Pastor Christine Simpson and the Men’s Fellowship of the church had erected a foundation for a house for Mr Walters but nothing else had been done. Following Hurricane Sandy in 2012, when the circumstances of Mr Walters became more dire and he was exposed to danger, Mr Radway said he approached his two brothers, Harry and Kirk, to see if, through the Tom Radway Foundation, in the name of their father, they could assist. He said they decided to help and took on the task, completing a room and bathroom for Mr Walters. He said several workmen and community persons contributed their labour as well as building material. It was handed over on June 8 at a small ceremony at the home in Charles Town, St Mary, at which prayers were said. Furniture from Food For the Poor was also handed over. A gift basket was also presented to Mr Walters from Charles Town Shoppers Mart, one of Mr Radway’s businesses. “We have to do what we can for the most needed,” Radway said. “We do not need to wait until people have to ask for assistance. Once we find ourselves in a position we don’t have to wait to help.”
