TANTALIZING DOUBLE HEADERS AT DRAX HALL AND ANNOTTO BAY
A full round of matches is on for this week Saturday, October 21, for teams that have advanced to the second round of the daCosta Cup.
(They shared top spot with Tacky and are part of a doubleheader at Annotto Bay)
Portland has two teams in the second round, St Mary three, St Ann one, and Trelawny two.
As stated by the North Coast Times in the first report previewing the D’ Cup 2023 season, Zone ‘C’ has proven to be the ‘Group of Death’. It brought together two teams that made the cut last year from Trelawny and six from St Ann, making up the eight-team Zone. Three emerged from it, Cedric Titus who won the zone, Ocho Rios who placed second and William Knibb who placed third.
Ocho Rios were, technically, the only team to beat Titus who they whipped at Drax Hall 4-1 on Tuesday, avenging an earlier defeat. Knibb had beaten Titus but lost the points as they had used an ineligible player.
William Knibb — who stuttered at the start and lost those three points — came on strong to dump Brown’s Town’s chances to advance. Knibb beat the Brown’s team, which had started well in the competition, 5-1 on Tuesday.
The other St Ann team that had hoped to advance, York Castle didn’t make the cut among the top four to play for the three places in the second round.
(On the important day, those boots had four goals in them for Tacky against Wycliffe Martin. Deadre Jackson pumped in all four through assists from Romario Gibbs. )
In Zone ‘I’ with eight teams from St Mary, Tacky emerged on top with St Mary High, both with 20 points but with Tacky having the better goal difference. Horace Clarke placed third. St Mary strengthened as they went along and their team clinched the second spot beating Horace Clarke 2-1 in their final match. Tacky secured their spot after an uneven season with a 4-1 routing of Wycliffe Martin.
There was no place this year for St Mary Tech who made it out of the Zone last season. Annotto Bay and Wycliffe Martin had shown potential but faltered as the competition progressed.
In Portland Runaway Zone ‘N’ winners Happy Grove are followed by Port Antonio High in the four-team zone.
