Students at the College of Agriculture Science and Education (CASE) in Portland have been complaining about a lack of water on the campus for days now.
President of the students union Christopher Honekghan says the situation is quite unfortunate but the administration has reached out for help and water is being trucked to the campus.
Reports are that the pump that supplies the college campus at Passley Gardens, near Port Antonio, broke down last Thursday, December 1, causing great inconvenience especially to the hundreds of students who live on campus.
Water was trucked to the campus on Friday and three other occasions (see video), and students had to use buckets, pans and other containers to gather water. Truked water has also been put into the reservoir.
Since then, however, students say some of those supplies have run out.
One student told North Coast Times that the situation has become almost unbearable now. Students say the faculty has been showing little understanding of their situation, pressing them to get to classes despite the unhygienic conditions some of them face in the dorms.
They say their frustration has been increased because President of the student body, Christopher Honeyghan has not been responding to calls to push the administration to solve the water problem or call off classes.
However, Mr Honeyghan says he has responded to calls from students and he is urging them to be responsible. “It’s a difficult situation but it’s our college and we have to protect it,” he said.
