JPs to submit annual reports

Justices of the peace (JPs) will soon be required to prepare yearly reports to their custodes.

This was revealed by custos of St Ann, Norma Walters at the annual St Ann Justice of the Peace Association (SAJPA) awards ceremony on Saturday, October 27.

The yearly reports were a requirement of the revised JP act that was tabled in parliament earlier this month, according to Mrs Walters.

She encouraged the JPs to read diligently, copies of the act that have been circulated to them.

The reports will be required at the end of January in the ensuing year and will take effect in January of 2018 if the act is passed.

In the meantime, the custos said that she has submitted the names of 70 persons to become JPs to the ministry of justice. However, she used the opportunity to state that becoming a JP is not an exclusive club.

“The main factors for inclusion (to become a JP) are good character, exemplary behavior, unquestionable integrity and high ethical and moral conduct,” she explained, while adding that it should not be seen as a badge of honour.

She also stressed, especially to the incumbent JPs “to be careful of their recommendations.”

“The successors you name are your legacy,” she added.
