Street lights in some divisions across St Ann are said to be out of service.
The issue was raised at the monthly meeting of the St Ann Municipal Corporation (SAMC) on Thursday, October 12.
Among the divisions affected are Bamboo, Calderwood and Sturge Town.
Councillor for the Bamboo division, Sydney Stewart said that while it was commendable that Jamaica Public Service (JPS) company was embarking on changing the old bulbs to the LED lights in the Ocho Rios, Exchange and Beecher Town divisions, the streets lights in his division were not working.
He lamented that a church in his area was broken into twice last week, because of the street light at the church gate was not working.
He told councillors that on several occasions, the pastor and church members had reported the street light as not working. Stewart further asked that a letter be sent to JPS mandating them to fix the street lights that are not working.
Councillor for the Calderwood division, Paul McFarlane, said that citizens were calling the JPS about the street lights and JPS was referring them to the councillors. This he said was putting the councillors in a bad light.
Mayor Michael Belnavis suggested that a letter be submitted to JPS outlining the affected areas.
Meanwhile, Councillor Lambert Weir of the Claremont division had explained that at a Roads and Works committee meeting, the JPS had promised that the older lights being taken down in Ocho Rios and other areas would be repaired and given to those areas in need of street lights.
He said that communication should be made with JPS to ascertain the state of repairs of these lights.
