Exchange All Age School commemorated Child’s Month with its annual library competition on Thursday, May 8, 2014 at the school’s auditorium under the theme “Reading is the pathway to success”.
Principal Ruben Parke delivered the welcome.
he judges were Ryan Dale, Cleodean Francis- Cooper, and Christall Byfield, reading coaches under the United State Agency for International Development/Ministry of Education programme
The competition had students from the lower school up to the higher grades, competing in their age groups.
The preparation for the competition was done at the various class levels.
DonivalGreen, vice principal told The Times the school was doing its best to inspire and motivate the students to be rounded citizens of the country. The children were enthused and motivated. Because of the competition the last year grade four class led by Marie Martin did exceptionally well in their Grade Four Literacy exam. Mr Green lauded the parents and business community for their overwhelming support in making it a calendar event of the school.
The day’s activity included spelling, read-off, comprehension/ questioning and the big book judging.
The winners of the spelling competition were: Damelio McClarty, grade one; Amabo Smith, grade two; Shanti Reid, grade three, coached by her mom; Jaleh Hamilton, grade four; Martia Johnson, grade five; Britney Hoilett, grade six; Dejore Anderson, grade seven and Sabrina Watson of grade 8 .
For the comprehension /questioning, students were questioned orally about a story read prior to the competition. Students from grades four to nine participated. The winners were Dolwayne McInnis of grade four; Oshane Bryan, grade five and Saskia James of grade six.
The read off competition winners are: Kalaina Miller of grade two; Kayla Hutchinson, grade three; Abigail Forrester, grade four; Shanice South, grade five; Davianna Bennett grade six; Clarke and Wasim Scott of Grade 8&9.
Grade four Tucker won the Williams trophy and Grade five Boswell the principal’s trophy.
The sponsors were Mylex Taxi Association, Williams Hardware, Dr. Horace Betton, Dr. Roger Carrington and Delapenha’s Funeral Parlour .The events coordinators were Miss McIntosh, Miss. Robinson, Mrs. Foreman, Miss. Tucker , Mrs. Watson- Tennant, Mrs. Foster- Green, Mrs. Boreland-Tracey and Mr. Henry the judge.
