A St Mary man, who is alleged to have stabbed and killed another man during an argument allegedly over a woman, has received a reduction in his bail sum.
The man had been offered bail months ago, but was still in custody as he failed to take up his bail as it was too large a sum for him.
These developments came to light when the accused man, Daniel Hinds appeared before the St Mary Parish Court on Thursday, January 12.
Hinds was charged in relation to the stabbing death of Shevan Henry, construction worker of Bamboo Walk, Retreat in the parish.
Reports from the Port Maria Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) are that about 5:30 a.m., Henry was at home with his girlfriend, when a man entered his premises and an argument developed between them. During the fracas, the man reportedly used a knife to stab Hinds several times. He was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
When Henry appeared before the court, the crown prosecutor indicated that the post-mortem report was now on the case file.
In addition, three statements in the case are to be certified.
Before a further mention date was set in the matter, Hinds’ attorney explained that his client was offered $400,000 bail in May of last year. He was also not to reside in Retreat, but to live in Highgate and report to the Highgate police on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
However, his attorney explained that Hinds has remained in custody since and has not been able to take up his bail offer. He asked the presiding judge for his client’s bail to be reduced.
Acting senior parish judge Yvette Wentworth-Miller later reduced Hind’s bail to $300,000 with one to six sureties. However, the judge added an additional condition that Hinds must surrender his travel documents.
Hinds is to return to court on February 23, 2017, when the case is to again be mentioned.
