With over one hundred cases on the list to be dealt with for this sitting of the Circuit Court, some well known cases which were called up on the first day, Monday, January 30, have been stood down for one reason or the other.
Here is a short list of some of the cases that were set for other dates.
The trial of Alfred Whorms which should have commenced, Monday morning has been cancelled. Whorms was executed only days before the beginning of Circuit at his business place in Runaway Bay, St Ann. He was before the court on a charge of manslaughter and his matter was postposed last Circuit to facilitate a then ongoing trial.
The court is yet to obtain the proof of Whorms’ death and is still awaiting confirmation. Although Whorms’ wife was present in court on Monday, Justice Georgiana Frazer told the court that it wasn’t fit for Mrs Whorms to give evidence of her husband’s death.
The other case mentioned was that of a group of men charged for the 2012 murder of Gavin Campbell. Charged for murder are: Mark Brown, Eric Ramjeet, Lorenzo McDonald and Kevin Bailey, who are all of Hampstead in Runaway Bay, St. Ann. The trial of the matter is however being hampered since one of the accused is still without legal representation.The men are set to return to court on Friday, February 3.
Similarly, Kevin Peterkin who is charged with the murder of his 22-year-old common-law-wife, Sasha Edwards, of Milford Road in Ocho Rios, has not settled his legal representation. Unlike others, this is not Peterkin’s first appearance in Circuit for the same matter, and as a result Justice Frazer was very displeased with his attitude towards settling representation. He is to return on February 8.
The other matter which has again been delayed is that of Indian national, Ranwan Mandyal, who is charged for manslaughter in an Ocho Rios jet ski accident in which a child was killed. One witness in the matter is said to be off the island. According to Mandyal’s attorney, Linton Gordon, this would have been Mandyal’s fourth appearance and the case has been delayed. The matter is set for priority trial on February 13.
