The Trelawny police have charged the driver of the car that was allegedly involved in a hit-and-run accident that claimed the life of Inspector Mark Gibbs in Clark’s Town on Friday, August 19.
The accused has been identified as 24-year-old mason Andre Brown of Spicy Hill, Trelawny.
Brown was charged after the police received a ruling from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) on Wednesday, August 31.
Brown was, on Thursday, September 1, charged with manslaughter, failing to stop at an accident scene and failing to report an accident.
The accused is expected to be brought before the court this week.
Fifty-three-year-old Inspector Gibbs died after he was hit down in front of the Clark’s Town Police Station where he was the sub-officer in charge of the station.
Reports from the Constabulary Communications Unit (CCU) are that at about 4:51 p.m. on Friday, August 19, the inspector was a part of a team conducting a Vehicular Check Point (VCP) when he signaled the driver of a burgundy Toyota Corolla motorcar to stop. The driver disobeyed and mowed down the inspector on the side of the road and speed away. The cop was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Investigators located the motor car hidden in bushes in the Clark’s Town area.
The driver surrendered to the police the following morning, Saturday, August 20.
