When 46-year-old Wegon Bennett kissed his wife Kesie Wray-Bennett goodbye on Tuesday, March 18, as she headed out to work at the St. Ann’s Bay hospital, little did she know that it would have been her last physical contact with him. The couple had been married for 20 years and together they have a 16-year-old daughter. Her life came crashing down Tuesday afternoon when she received news that her daughter had returned home from school to find her father’s lifeless body. Wegon Bennett body was discovered inside his bathroom at his Belle Aire home in Runaway Bay, St Ann, with at least five stab wounds, most of them to his back. His hands and feet were bound. The frightened child reportedly ran from the house screaming and alerted neighbours to the gruesome discovery. There were no signs of forced entry to the two-storey building. The upper floor is still under construction. Mrs Bennett, a nurse, said her husband most likely knew his killer or killers and that the person was brought or let into the house. “Obviously the person was brought into the house, obviously it is somebody that my husband knew,” she explained that her husband would not have allowed strangers into the house. Several items including an entertainment surround system, television, laptop and cellular phones were reportedly stolen from the house. The house was ransacked. However, the St. Ann police who are probing the murder have not yet said if robbery is the motive behind Bennett’s death.
Mrs. Bennett, in the meantime, said her husband was a very hardworking and peaceful person and she is puzzled as to why someone would want to kill him. “He is the perfect husband, he is loving, kind and gentle, he is a God fearing person,” she said. North Coast Times was told that Mr. Bennett and his family attended church the Sunday before his demise and was so moved by the sermon that he promised church members that he would return the following Sunday. Mr. Bennett, at the time of his murder was on an eight-week break from his job as a head pastry chef on one of the cruise ships operated by the Disney Cruise Line. His wife said he had been employed to Disney Cruise Line for 14 years and was expected to return to work on April 5. As news of the killing broke, a large crowd converged outside the gate even as investigators search for clues into the brutal murder. Some persons wept openly while others stood in disbelief. A distraught Mrs Bennett said she last spoke to her husband on the telephone about midday and she said he was fine at that time. “My daughter came home about 3:30 only to find him tied up in the bathroom with knife stab in his back,” she explained. She said family and friends were shaken and in shock over the brutal manner in which he was killed.
” At present we are not dealing with it too well, but as time goes on, God will give us time to heal,” she said. “We are keeping the faith, we have family and friends who are around and God will take care of us.”Head of the St. Ann police, Senor Superintendent Yvonne Martin Daley, said the police were carrying out intense investigation into the murder and she has appealed to anyone who might have information to contact the police.
