Stand off under taxi

Taxi car

A stand off between the police and a taxi operator ended just after 5 p.m. (January 19) in Ocho Rios after the taxi man had gone under his vehicle to prevent it being moved by a wrecker.

The stand off went on for over an hour, attracting huge crowds in the centre of the resort town.

In a crack down going on over the last week, police have been seizing taxis that have been parking or taking on or letting down passengers in the region of the Ocho Rios clock, especially at Evelyn Street.

This afternoon, in attempting to seize and tow a taxi, police were frustrated by the driver who went under the car and refused to emerge.

DSP Gairy McKenzie in charge of Ocho Rios police told the Times this is the new modus of some taxi operators. He said the police would not relent. “We will just wait and whenever they come out from under the car we will arrest and charged them for obstructing police in carrying out their duties and still seize and tow the vehicle.

DSP McKenzie told The Times that up to 4 p.m. Tuesday seven vehicles had been seized in the centre of Ocho Rios.
