In tough economic times earning a valuable education and skill is critical to sustaining one’s self in society. Career Nursing International (CNI) is shaping and equipping young students to work in nursing care and related careers. The nursing school has four locations — Ocho Rios, St Ann’s Bay, Port Antonio and Morant Bay.
When The Times visited the Ocho Rios institution and spoke with the principal, Viola Thompson, she gave the overview of the school. The institution has been in existence for eighteen (18) years and opened its doors in Ocho Rios in July, 2015. The courses offered at the school include; medical assistant, practical nursing (13 months) and health care assistant, which are all diploma courses. The short courses offered, which have a duration of four months, include: pharmaceutical assistant, pediatric nursing, geriatric nursing, mental health care, phlebotomy technician and dental care assistant. The International courses include N-Clex Practical Nursing Studies, City and Guilds diploma courses.Ms Thompson made special mention of the fact that, with the courses offered, students receive the opportunity to sit free three CSEC subjects — English Language, mathematics and human and social biology. Ms Thompson said that the rates are affordable with courses starting as low as $12,000.Getting registered at Career Nursing International is very easy as it requires no CSEC subjects but the candidate must pass a basic mathematics and English test to be enrolled. There are 36 students at the Ocho Rios location and the school body is expecting to grow. After the successful candidates have completed the specified course, some are sent to nursing homes and hospitals for internships after which they are suitable for employment at doctor’s office, public hospitals and other health care facilities and in private care.Ms Thompson said that the school has two additional tutors Marcia Wilson, nursing instructor and Hugh Shantrelle, academic tutor. Miss Thompson urged prospective students to come in and speak with her to make provisions to begin their course of choice, so they can earn a lifetime profession that is affordable.
