Man sells land he didn’t own for $100,000; says he was authorized

A man, who appeared before the Port Maria Resident Magistrate court Thursday, July 9, on a charge of obtaining money by false pretence, had his case set for trial.

Michael Henry is the man charged.The court heard that the accused man sold a piece of land that did not belong to him at a cost of $100,000.The accused man pleaded “guilty with explanation” to the charges.Resident magistrate Andrea Collins told the accused man that she was not surprised at him coming to court over the same issue as he had stood before her on similar allegations prior on several occasions. She then asked the accused man to give her his explanation.“Your Honour, it was a lady by the name of Mrs. Johnson who instructed me to sell the land on her behalf,” he explained.RM Collins told the accused that if he knew he was going to waste her time by giving an explanation, he should plead guilty if he knew he had no permission to sell the land.“Mrs. Johnson gave me permission to sell di land, Your Honour,” the accused, Henry reemphasized to the RM.sex charge“Is she coming here to testify on your behalf? Because even though you may have returned the money, you still have to stand trial,” RM Collins explained to the accused man.

A trial date of December 10 was set for Henry’s case. He is expected to return to court on that date.
