Focus on Garvey’s achievements – Prof Hall

The St Ann Homecoming and Heritage Foundation in conjunction with the St Ann Parish Library Network hosted their annual Marcus Garvey lecture on Wednesday, June 10 at the St Ann’s Bay Library, in the parish capital.Custos emeritus Radcliffe Walters began proceedings and did the opening prayer.Lance Nieta, public relations consultant at Noranda Jamaica Bauxite Partners and chairman of the St Ann Homecoming Heritage Foundation gave the opening remarks. Custos Norma Walters gave the welcome. The lecture saw several students from schools on the coast such as York Castle High, Muschett High School, Ocho Rios High and St Ann’s Bay Primary attending the lecture.The guest speaker for the morning, the Most Honourable, Professor Sir Kenneth Hall, retired Governor-General of Jamaica, in outlining the achievements of Garvey said there was still not enough respect shown to Jamaica’s first National Hero. Sir Kenneth said there were still too many who focussed on Garvey’s disappointments rather than his accomplishments and his blue print for development of Black people.Sir Kenneth was presented a gift basket by Andrea Mumby-Brown manager C&WJ co-operative Credit Union, St Ann’s Bay branch and member of the St Ann Homecoming and foundation.The Marcus Garvey Centre, the culmination of a collaborative venture with the Jamaica Library Service network was officially opened on August 17, 2012 on the upper floor of the renovated and expanded library in St Ann’s Bay.
