The Breadnut Hill Basic School, located near Ocho Rios, St Ann is one of those institutions with great growth potential. When The Times visited the school on Wednesday, January 14 the atmosphere was lit with the laughter and smiles of students at play.Principal of the institution, Alice Thomas gave the Times an overview of the school’s progress. The Breadnut Hill Basic School was started in 1983 with approximately 20 students with the first principal and vice principal, Miriam Russell and Marjorie Gordon, respectively. The founder of the school was Rev Violet Clarke. The school now has eighteen (18) students enrolled, with two teachers. Principal, Alice Thomas said that their main aim is to obtain more students at the school. She also said that the school is financed through fundraising such as luncheons and concerts. It also receives some help from the Culture, Health, Arts, Sports and Education (CHASE) Fund.Wilda Wilmot, the corresponding sponsor of the school said “ I am grateful to the CHASE fund and their response to us that they could help us with the school and where we are at now and that the children can have a better environment to learn and to play each day.”
