NEW ALEXANDRIA MARKET COULD BE READY BY YEAR END

ALEXANDRIA, St Ann; Aug 14, 2026

Residents of Alexandria and surrounding communities in south St. Ann could have a new market by the end of the year.

That’s according to the St Ann Municipal Corporation (SAMC), which says the market construction, which started four months ago, is progressing well.

According to Chairman of the SAMC, Mayor Michael Belnavis, the facility will provide several services when completed, including food and meat sales and office space. He said it would also have a large area for parking and space available for rent for entertainment events.

The old market building was demolished to make way for the structure now being put up that the Mayor says is solid, cool with high ceilings and showing no defects. The cost of the new facility was not stated.

Councillor Belnavis was speaking on a recent visit to the site. He was accompanied by Deputy Mayor Councillor Cardell Wickham, of the adjoining Gibraltar division, and Councillor for the Alexandria Division, Rohan Davidson.

The Mayor praised the collaborative effort behind the project, noting the contribution of Minister of Local Government and Community Development, Desmond McKenzie, Member of Parliament for South West St. Ann, Zavia Mayne, Councillor Davidson, the St. Ann Municipal Corporation and other stakeholders.

For his part, Councillor Davidson said the new market will benefit several St. Ann communities.

The SAMC says that “With construction progressing steadily, it is anticipated that the market will be opened officially later this year.”
