Two Temporary Lanes at Mammee Bay Toll Plaza Allowed Better Flow
MAMMEE BAY, St Ann; July 21, 2026
The toll road operators say a temporary move to reduce congestion at the Mammee Bay toll plaza has been successful.
A plan to improve the throughput of traffic by using two additional temporary lanes was announced days before Reggae Sumfest was scheduled in Priory, St Ann on Saturday, July 18, 2026.
On many weekends and especially when there was an entertainment event in St Ann, that toll plaza became clogged, tying up westbound traffic, sometimes for hours.

“Temporary Traffic management measures implemented at the Mammee Bay Toll Plaza have successfully eased weekend congestion on the North-South Highway, allowing motorists to move through the toll plaza without delay during one of the busiest travel weekends of the year,” the operators said in a release.
They gave data to show that the number of vehicles increased over the Sumfest weekend compared to other similar periods.

“Despite the significant increase in demand, motorists continued to move through the toll plaza without significant delays, demonstrating the effectiveness of the temporary measures introduced to improve traffic flow,” the statement said.
The improvements were the result of discussions between the Government of Jamaica, through the National Road Operating and Constructing Company Limited (NROCC), and the operators of the North-South Highway, Jamaica North South Highway Company Limited (JNSHC).
Those discussions led to several immediate measures being implemented, including the construction of two temporary spill-over lanes to address recurring traffic spikes at the toll plaza.
“The high-traffic weekend provided the ideal opportunity to test the effectiveness of the temporary traffic mitigation measures, including the construction of the two additional toll lanes at Mammee Bay. The successful outcome demonstrates that the measures are delivering as intended,” said Mr. Stephen Edwards, Managing Director of NROCC.
