Saturday, September 20 was Environmental Clean Up Day that should have had more significance to Jamaica, especially with the outbreak of Chicungunya. Some work was done in parts of St Mary. A team of environment activists and other volunteers cleaned up Newstead School, to Ginger Bottom, roadsides and river and joined the cleanup efforts of the Three Hills Farmers Association and Breezy Hill Environmental Youth Group to clean up a section of White River. About 60 people, led by Kenrick Johnson, volunteered from the Three Hills area. After hours of work, Jashana Hawkins floated a plastic bottle boat, made from plastic so harmful to the environment and so commonly found everywhere. The bus shelter (also shown in photo) in Three Hills was built two summers ago and involved volunteer youth and adults from the district. The bus shelter was built out of 2, 386 plastic bottles filled with dirt. Empty plastic bottles improperly disposed, apart from usually being ugly, can act as breeding place for mosquitoes. The concept of recycling by creating new things from disposable trash is led through the Breezy Hill Environmental Youth Group.
