LABOUR FOR HEALTH AT ST ANN’S BAY HOSPITAL

DOCTORS, NURSES, OTHER STAFF VOLUNTEER FOR WORK IN SURGERIES, BIOPSIES, HEALTH EDUCATION

ST ANN’S BAY, May 22, 2025

Doctors, nurses, and support staff at the St Ann’s Bay Regional Hospital will be doing surgeries, biopsies, and other procedures as their Labour Day project tomorrow, Friday, May 23. And it’s all free, voluntary service.

The hospital staff members will also be involved in awareness raising and health care activities, including a blood collection drive, cancer screening, and Know Your Numbers.

At the same time, members of the Ocho Rios/Runaway Bay Chapter of the Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association will be carrying out beautification and improvement works on sections of the hospital.

For the Blood Drive, the target is 100 Units of blood. If you are going to the hospital on Friday to give blood, you are reminded that donors should have a healthy meal and hydrate adequately before the donation process

 

They say if you are unable to make it there Friday, they are accepting blood donations for the entire month of May, towards the project.

Dr Lenworth Sterling, surgical resident, told the North Coast Times that they have pre-selected individuals, suspected of having cancer, for procedures tomorrow that will help with the diagnoses. These procedures include

*Breast Lump biopsies
* Prostate biopsies

* Pipelle biopsy for endometrium (uterus/ womb?)

* Colposcopies (for cervix)

The doctors will also be doing Carpal Tunnel Releases for carpal tunnel syndrome (a condition of the wrist)

Patients have already been prepared for surgery, but the team at the hospital is asking that you use this opportunity to come out and do your screening and health checks.

The medical staff will also have a Know Your Numbers section:

This area will involve: blood pressure checks,  blood sugar checks,  weight and height, health talks and fun learning games.
