Three people were killed in separate traffic crashes in St Ann on Monday, May 5. Two of those killed were motorcyclists driving unregistered cycles involved in crashes with trucks.

Dead are 21-year-old Nickoy McKoy of Faith’s Pen, and 19-year-old Jaden Johnson, unemployed of Brown Hill, Claremont, both in St. Ann. The third man who died was not identified.

Monday’s deaths bring to 13 the number of people to have lost their lives in crashes in St Ann since January 1. It is noteworthy that three of the last four road deaths in St Ann, including one on Thursday, May 1, at Richmond, involved trucks.MAN KILLED IN BIZARRE TRUCK CRASH IN ST ANN

In a comment to the North Coast Times, Acting Senior Superintendent for St Ann, Rohan Elliott, said: “So far this year, we have had 13 fatal collisions resulting in 13 deaths, compared to 15 fatal collisions and 21 deaths for the same period last year. I want to implore motorists and other road users to exercise caution, obey traffic signs, and reduce speed when traveling.” He urged even more caution on the Discovery Bay to Priory stretch of the North Coast Highway.”

In the first Faith’s Pen crash, about 11:45 Monday morning, an Isuzu Elf motor truck and an unregistered motorcycle were travelling in opposite directions.   The motorcyclist, Nicoy McKoy, with a pillion, was negotiating a corner when the cycle drifted over into the path of the truck, causing a collision.

The driver of the motorcycle, McKoy, sustained injuries and was rushed to the Moneague Health Centre, where he was pronounced dead. The pillion was taken to the St Ann’s Bay Hospital, where he was admitted in serious condition.

The second crash, Monday, took place about 12:48 p.m. along the Beechamville main road, near Claremont, St. Ann. It involved a Falcon motorcycle with no registration plate affixed, driven by Jaden Johnson, and a 1999 Mitsubishi Canter motor truck registered CQ5146.

Police say Johnson was driving the motorcycle along the roadway when it hit a Ferncourt High School student and the driver lost control of the motorcycle which then collided into the front section of the motor truck, going in the opposite direction.

The motorcyclist was flung underneath the truck. He sustained head injuries and was pronounced dead at St. Ann’s Bay Hospital.

The third crash on Monday took place at about 5:45 at Faith’s Pen. According to notes from the police, made available through the National Road Safety Council (NRSC), a white Toyota Hiace bus, registered CT 6209, crashed along the roadway, killing a 61-year-old passenger of the vehicle. The police report said possible causes of the crash include error of judgement, mechanical defect, or losing control.

In the crash at Richmond Estate previously reported by the North Coast Times, Thursday, May 1, a passenger in an Isuzu Elf motor truck died when the truck crashed into the back of an International motor truck that was waiting at the traffic light at Richmond Estate. The passenger was identified as 35-year-old Michael Gordon of Chapleton, Clarendon.
