CASTLETON, St Mary; April 21, 2005

The medical staff at Annotto Bay Hospital, St Mary, is in shock at the death of a doctor assigned to the hospital, in a traffic crash near Castleton in the parish, Monday morning, April 21, 2025.

Dead is 36-year-old Dr Ubung Etti of Nigeria, who was a resident in  Annotto Bay.

Three other doctors from Nigeria and Ghana were injured and admitted to hospital in the Crash.

Reports from the Castleton Police are that at about 5:50 a.m., Etti was a passenger aboard a blue Honda Fit motor car, with three other occupants aboard, travelling from Kingston towards Annotto Bay. Upon reaching a section of the roadway, the driver swerved to avoid a collision with an oncoming vehicle, hit an embankment, and plunged about 150 feet into a precipice.

The vehicle came to rest on the embankment of a river.

Police say Dr Etti and his three colleagues – all medical interns at Annotto Bay Hospital — were taken to the facility where he was pronounced dead.

In response to the fatal crash, the Board and Management of the North-East Regional Health Authority (NERHA) expressed “profound sadness” at the incident and death of Dr Etti.

It described Dr Etti as a  “dedicated medical doctor” and  “a healthcare professional who was deeply committed to his work.”

The NEHRA release said: “We recognise the vital contributions of these doctors; all four doctors serve as intern medical officers in various departments as part of the conditions of medical internship at the Annotto Bay Hospital for about six (6) months, demonstrating their unwavering commitment to the health and well-being of our communities.”

Senior Medical Officer at the Hospital Dr Glenton Strachan said: “The Annotto Bay Hospital Team is in shock and mourning….The entire staff is finding it extremely difficult to cope with this loss.”

The Castleton Police are investigating.
