BOSTON JERK CENTRE CLOSED OVER HEALTH CONCERNS

4 VENDORS FINED, MEETING FRIDAY TO GET CHANGES

Health authorities and vendors at the Boston Jerk Centre, Portland are to meet Friday morning following the closure of the popular attraction and eating place.

The attraction was closed last week Friday by the Portland Health Department following breaches in health regulations and the failure of four vendors to have up-to-date food handlers permits.

Four vendors were charged for the breaches and taken to court where they were fined a total of $110,000.

Boston in East Portland has developed a reputation as the home of jerk and is mentioned synonymously with that method of preparing meats.

Details of the closure and compliance action of the Health Department came at the monthly meeting of the Portland Municipal Corporation (PMC), on Thursday, September 12, 2024.

Chief Public Health Inspector Lorenzo Hume told the PMC that there has bene a noticeable decline in the number of people attending clinics for Food Handlers Permits.

“We have taken action against four food vendors at Boston Jerk Centre, they were taken to the Parish Court and prosecuted where the judge charged them a total of one hundred and ten thousand dollars ($110,000),“ The Chief Public Health Inspector reported.

He said despite various discussions and meetings with the Boston vendors they were not compliant hence the Health Department’s action.

The meeting scheduled for Friday morning, September 13 with the vendors is to be followed by one later with stakeholders,
