CLAUDETTE BROWN, JLPSTURGE TOWN DIVISION, St Ann Municipal Corporation
Claudette Brown is a performer. Her penchant for getting things done is what the people of the Sturge Town Division should expect if she wins the February 26 election to represent them in the St Ann Municipal Corporation (SAMC). Mrs Brown is a teacher by profession, founder and Principal of the New Vision ECI, a Justice of the Peace, and an ordained Missionary. “I am the candidate for Sturge Town Division to go to the St Ann Municipal Corporation to give good representation and attend to the needs of the people,” she says. She knows the Sturge Town Division. “Born here, live here, married here, mom and dad are from here. I’m from the people and for the people, standing with the people,” she says. The basic necessities of the people are her target. These, for her, include roads, water, and electricity. “I am going to keep consulting with the people and set priorities on how to meet the needs of the Division,” she says. Mrs Brown says that although the MP for North West St Ann, Krystal Lee, has been doing a good job repairing roads, there are some parochial roads that are in a terrible state and they need urgent attention. She lists some as being in Hampton, Shawberry, Old Road, Llandovery Mountain, Mt Edgecombe and Knapdale, among other communities. She says people know her for her work. As an example, she cites that in 2008 she started a small school, New Vision ECI, under a tent at Mount Edgecombe in the Division. Through hard work and commitment, it is now a two-storey six classroom building with more than 111 students, seven teachers, a cook, and a janitor. In addition to the infrastructure projects, there are personal welfare issues of those most in need in the Division that she intends to address. These needs including housing should be addressed as a priority. “I am a performer. When I get involved things have to move forward by the Grace of God,” she says. COSMO HENRY, PNPSTURGE TOWN DIVISION, St Ann Municipal Corporation
Cosmo Henry is a part-time teacher and school secretary who is making himself available to represent the people of the Sturge Town Division in the St Ann Municipal Corporation (SAMC). The recipient of the St. Ann Social Development Commission’s “Community Leader of the Year” Award in 2019, Mr. Henry is service-oriented with civic engagements spanning Youth Club founder and president, Community Development Committee (CDC) chairman, deacon, and former School Board vice chairman. With this innate vision of service, Mr Henry says he wants to help to move the communities of the division forward. These include Sturge Town, Beverley, Mt. Zion, Trysee, Runaway Bay and Salem, among others. Mr. Henry says years of JLP representation have not led to the development of these communities. He says that’s easy to see based on the poor and deteriorating state of the Parish Council roads, water supply and other responsibilities of Local Government. Mr Henry intends to be an advocate for the people, one who will inspire and effect change. His advocacy and representation shall include: engaging the people, knowing what the varied issues are, and then stimulating the relevant bodies within the Municipal Corporation to achieve the desired change. Mr. Henry envisions the progressive development of the division with better management and maintenance of road infrastructure, drains and gullies; street lighting and water supplies. He will be an advocate for the elderly, many of whom are unaware of the requisite assistance that can be had through state agency partnerships such as Drugs for the Elderly and P.A.T.H. programme. Programmes geared at channelling the energies of young people for a positive outlook through not only sports but also training and certification shall be a priority item. It is a feat Mr. Henry intends to achieve through robust representation as Councillor for the Sturge Town Division. These objectives will not be partisan but aligned to benefit all constituents.
