The PNP has booted from its ranks, the former Councillor for the Bensonton Division in the South East St Ann Constituency, Lydia Richards.

Ms Richards was nominated as an Independent candidate on Thursday, February 8, for the Bensonton seat where she represented the People’s National Party (PNP) for several years.

She was not selected by the Party to represent the Division in the upcoming elections. The PNP’s candidate is Clovis Gohagen.

In a release Friday morning, the PNP named Richards as one of four it has expelled. They have all been nominated as Independents in different Divisions.

The Party says the decision to expel the four aligns with Rule 263 which explicitly states that “no person contesting a seat as a candidate in opposition to the PNP may continue as a member of the Party.”

A three-way race is expected in the Division where Maxine Simpson has been nominated for the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP).

See the Times for her response in a later story.
