STUDENTS FROM VARIOUS COURSES, SPORTS BENEFIT

More than 150 students of Moneague College, St Ann have been given scholarships and grants for the 2023-24 academic year, with a value of over J$18 million.
The students from all areas of study at the multidisciplinary institution were handed the assistance at a scholarship awards ceremony at the college in Mongeaue, on Thursday, November 16, 2023.
Principal of the College Howard Isaacs said he was thankful to those private companies and institutions, some of whom were long-standing, for contributing funds for the scholarship programme.

Provision of financial aid to students made a lot of difference to their lives and performance, Mr Isaacs said.
The college each year sets aside financial assistance for students. Mr Isaacs said this year the college provided J$16.5 million for the purpose. Additional contribution from donors was more than $2 million dollars.

In addition, this year a new scholarship fund of $1 million was set up by former Board Chairman, and former MP for the area Ambassador Aloun Assamba, in memory of her son Domonic Strachan who died suddenly in September.

Vice Principal for Student and Academic Affairs, Jacqueline Thames said the college made an effort to assist every student who applied and was in need. Ms Thames, who was Master of Ceremonies at the event, said for students to receive academic scholarships, regardless of need, they were required to have a minimum GPA of 3.3.

Referring to assistance given to students doing sports, she said they had to show some skills and prowess in the particular sport but also had to have a good GPA. More than 40 students were offered scholarships in track and field, basketball, cricket, football, netball, and volleyball.

Ms Thames said the college was committed to continuing to provide financial assistance to students.
Guest Speaker was Sanjay Lugg a past student of the college and now a law student at the UWI. She congratulated the college on its scholarship programme from which she also benefitted. Miss Lugg was granted a scholarship through the college’s Sports scholarship programmes, while a student of the institution. She represented the college playing Netball. She was introduced by Rose Ann Blackwood, President of the Guild of Students.
Greetings were brought by Vice Chairman of the Board, Rev I.M. Llewellyn, and Vice Principal for Academics Leroy Harvey.
Kevaugh Small, a student gave the vote of thanks.
